Summer Term

This term we will be reading, ‘The Highwayman’ and using this as a stimulus for writing a Persuasive advert and Diary extract. We will also be reading, ‘The Windrush Child’ ad learning the grammar skills needed to write another

Persuasive advert and an

Informal letter.

Our poetry focus this term will be Free Verse.

We will be fine tuning our reasoning skills related to all the mathematical topics we have covered this year so far and continue to practise arithmetic skills. Once SATs are over, we will be consolidating our maths learning ready for the transition to secondary school.

Our first science topic this term is ‘How do we see?'. In this topic, we will be exploring light and how we are able to see. We will be conducting our own investigations into Shadows.

Our final topic for this year will be ‘What happens when we change circuits?’ In this topic, we will be predicting and investigating what happens when we change various elements within a circuit eg the brightness of bulbs or the volume of a buzzer.

During the summer term the children will complete a data detective unit of work. This unit introduces children to Data Detectives, an interactive set of databases challenges that children work through. Children will be expected to interpret information being requested and query databases to find the information. They will also complete a 3D modelling unit. This unit explores 3D Modelling design using the CAD software, 2Design and Make, on Purple Mash. It guides children to create, refine and evaluate models with creativity and purpose.

We will be finding out about the Ancient Maya civilisation and finding out about their daily lives and looking in depth at the development of their number and writing systems.

During the Summer term the children will complete a fieldwork topic based on sustainability. The children will be

looking to find the answers to the following questions.

1. What is plastic waste?

2. What can our school do to reduce plastic waste?

3. How can we plan and carry out effective ways to reduce plastic waste in school?

4. How can we record and evaluate effective ways to reduce plastic waste in school?

This term we will be completing a topic on sculpture where we will be studying examples of work by artists, Peter Anton, Kate Malone and Barbara Hepworth. The children will learn to how to work with clay to create a sculpture based on observed sketches they complete on still life food composition.

This term we will be investigating, designing and making our own 'Leaver's' badges.

PSHE/RSE

Health and Wellbeing focussing on Growing Up and Living in the Wider World looking specifically at Money Matters.

What can we learn from religions about temptation? We will be discussing stories about temptation from both Christianity and Islam.

How do we express our spiritual ideas? We will be looking at the ways in which spiritual ideas can be expressed through the arts.

French

During the summer term the children will be taught the topics, ‘Our precious planet’ and ‘More to explore’.

During the topic, ‘Our precious planet’ the children will be taught to describe key environmental challenges in their local area, at the same time developing their awareness of sustainability. They will learn how to use the immediate future to say what positive environmental actions they are going to take, as well as what they think some groups of people are going to do.

In our topic, ‘More to explore’ the children will be taught to develop their vocabulary skills and practise a range of key French sounds including accents, liaisons, silent letters and nasal vowels. They will have the opportunity to learn more about France and French speaking countries, read a lovely story in French and perform a fun French rap to practise key rhyming sounds. They will take part in conversations, interviews, games, activities and surveys, as well as fun reading and writing challenges, all with the goal of improving their literacy and oracy skills in French.

Music

This Term we will be completing the topic, ‘Race’. The objective we will cover for this unit will be:

Create an accompaniment.  Create an extended melody with four distinct phrases. Experiment with harmony.

Structure ideas into a full soundtrack.

Another topic, we will be delivering in Year 6 is, ‘Exploring identity through song’ where will learn:

To Identify ways songwriters convey meaning: through lyrics, the music, and the performance.

To Understand different ways that rhymes work in songs.

To Identify different elements of a song’s structure.

To understand the concept of identity and how you can express that in songs. 

Towards the end of the school year, we are looking forward to practising all of the songs we will be performing in our Year 6 Leaver's Assembly.

Spelling

In Year 6 we will be following the Spelling Shed scheme of work, learning about the morphology and etymology of spellings. We will be using a range of strategies such as counting syllables and phonemes to support us in breaking sown spelling in to bitesize manageable steps. All children will have a login to complete spelling tasks online where they can practice these spellings both at school and at home.

During the Summer Term the children will be learning about agility, fitness, strength and balance as well as locomotion.

The children will also be completingathletics and rounders lessons. 

Things spread quickly online— exploring how the things that we do online can spread quickly and how we need to be mindful of this when using the internet.

Selling stereotypes— Exploring how the media can play a powerful role in shaping our ideas about gender and challenge  and explain why it is important to reject inappropriate messages about gender online.
