English

This term Year 6 will be reading Letters from the lighthouse and the picture book, Night of the gargoyles based on these texts the children will be learning about the grammar features needed to write a diary entry and narrative. They will also be reading Macbeth, where they will be learning to write a

Character and character description.

Our poetry this term will be learning the features of Iambic Pentameter and writing their own poem in this style.

Maths

As well as revisiting the topics from last term we will also have an introduction to basic algebra, complete work on statistics and explore shape and angles in more detail. All of these topics will be completed by practising and then applying skills learned in problem solving contexts. In addition to this, we will continue to practise all of our arithmetic skills daily.

Science

Our Science topic this term is Our Bodies, which includes identifying and naming the major organs of the body, finding out about the human circulatory system, discussing what is needed to live a healthy lifestyle and understanding the effects of unhealthy choices on our bodies.

Computing

During the Spring Term, the children will complete a Google Sheets unit of work where they will explore how to create spreadsheets and use their functionality to support real-world decision-making and problem-solving.

They will also be taught a Networks topic which allows children to learn more about what networks are, what they do and how they connect devices. Children also consider the safety aspects of networks, including the possible positive and negatives uses of networks.

History

We will be continuing with our topic of Crime and Punishment. 

Geography

We will be continuing with our topic, ‘Economic Activity of the UK.

Art

Pattern is our art topic at the end of this term. We will be looking at what makes a pattern a pattern, some artists famous for their pattern work and designs including William Morris and finally creating our own patterns based on the natural world.

D&T

During the first half of this term, we will be looking at what cam mechanisms are, how they work and where they are used in the real world. We will end by designing our own toy that uses this type of mechanism. 

PSHE/RSE

Our first topic this term is called ‘Living in the Wider World - One World’ looking at the relationship between rights and responsibilities, the importance of having compassion towards others and ways of carrying out shared responsibilities. Our second topic is called ‘Relationships - TEAM’ where we will focus on friendships and relationships with others(both online and in the real world) - how we can tell if these are healthy relationships, respecting others and recognising that personal behaviour can affect others both positively or negatively.

RE

In RE this term, we will be looking at both Hinduism and Sikhism and identifying inspirational founders and leaders within both of these faiths including Bhagat Puran Singh and Mahatma Gandhi.

French

This Term, Year 6 will be completing the topics, ‘This is France’ and ‘All in a day’.

The ‘This is France!’ unit will teach the children key vocabulary related to France and, in particular, Paris. Your class will learn specific vocabulary to describe France's neighbours and positions/distances of a variety of cities. They will learn the French names for famous French landmarks and how to describe what people do when they visit Paris. Also, one lesson focuses on famous French people and children will learn the French names for the areas that they were/are famous for.

In this ‘All in a Day' unit, your children will learn how to tell the time: o’clock, half past, quarter past, quarter to and 5-minute intervals. They will learn how to use 24-hour times and the way in which the French represent a.m. and p.m. times.

Music

This term we will be completing the topics, ‘Dona nobis pacem’, ‘You to me are everything’ and, ‘Twinkle variations’ during these topics, we will be learning:

To Compose an 8-bar piece on percussion, in 3-time and using chords F and C major.

To sing a round accurately and in a legato style.

To sing a chorus in two-part harmony with dancing on the beat.

To Identify changes in texture between parts moving together (homophonic texture) and parts moving independently (polyphonic texture) as well as much, much more.

Spelling

In Year 6 we will be following the Spelling Shed scheme of work, learning about the morphology and etymology of spellings. We will be using a range of strategies such as counting syllables and phonemes to support us in breaking sown spelling in to bitesize manageable steps. All children will have a login to complete spelling tasks online where they can practice these spellings both at school and at home.

PE

Year 6 will be completing a range of activities during our PE lessons this term. These will include coordination, strength and balance skills as well as learning a range of net and wall games - in particular learning the rules of and playing tennis.

Online Safety

 We will be looking at how the online world can affect our health, wellbeing and lifestyle including recognising features of persuasive design and how this can be used to keep users engaged; recognising the pressures that technology can put on people and how these can be managed; and assessing different strategies to limit the impact of technology on health.
