Spring Term

English

We will be reading, writing and exploring a variety of text types. Our writing will include narrative work focusing on characterising speech, a flashback narrative, discussion and a persuasive advert, as well as Senryu poetry. In reading, we will study The Tempest, Refugees and Migrants and The Arrival. We will also continue to develop spelling and grammar skills to support independent writing. 

Maths

We will be continuing to develop a whole range of mathematical skills, building on our previous knowledge. This term will include multiplication and division, fractions, decimals and percentages, perimeter and area, and statistics. We will also be continuing to improve our knowledge of times tables, up to 12 x 12, and the division facts related to them. 

Science

This term, year 5 will be exploring the question, ‘Do solids that dissolve in liquid vanish?’ in our materials topic.

Computing

Year 5 will continue to develop their Coding skills. In Spring 2, they will use Google Tools and complete a Safe Searching unit. 

History

In our Anglo-Saxon and Viking topic we will be finding out about the legacy that was left behind by the Anglo-Saxons, learning about when did the Vikings invaded and who were the significant figures during this period of time. 

Geography

In geography this term, our focus will be Rivers, asking: “What are the features of my local river?” 

Art

 In art this term we will be completing a textiles project, learning about the work of Kaffe Fassett. We will be looking at fabric printing and tye-dying. 

D&T

During Spring 2 the children will be completing a project on materials, where they will produce a phone case where they will explore a range of sewing techniques. 

PSHE/RSE

Our topic this term is called ‘Living in the Wider World - Diverse Britain’ This unit is inspired by the idea that Britain represents a wide range of faiths and ethnicities and that the structures within it are there to support all. It aims to enable the children to identify how they can make a positive contribution to the community. In this unit, children learn about the law and the consequences of not respecting it. They will also learn about the workings of local and national government and the role of charities and volunteering.

In Spring 2, our PSHE focus will be Relationships: Digital Wellbeing. 

RE

In RE this term, we will explore commitments and meanings across Hindu, Muslim, Christian and non-religious worldviews, and consider “Respect for All: What will make Walsall a more respectful place?” 

French

This term we will complete the French topics “That’s Tasty” and “Family and Friends”. 

Music

This term, the children will study “Madina tun nabi”, followed by Keyboards: Building a Groove and “Epoca”.

Spelling

This term we will be looking at the following spelling rules:

-able where the -e from the base word remains

Adverbs of time

Suffixes where the base word ends in -fer

Silent first letters and other silent letters

-ie after -c and -ei making an /ee/ sound

-ough

Adverbs of possibility and frequency

Challenge Words 

PE

Year 5 will develop coordination, manipulation, strength and balance through PE, alongside gymnastics and dance. They will also develop coordination, strength and balance and play tennis.

Online Safety

In Online Safety we will be learning about our online community: explaining that online communities can have both a positive and negative impact on the user.
