English
We will be reading, writing and exploring a variety of text types, including fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Our writing will include place value for grammar, a non-chronological report, an informal letter, Haiku poetry, a setting description and a diary recount. We will also continue to develop our spelling and grammar skills to support independent writing.
In Whole Class Reading we will be reading Kensuke’s Kingdom, Survivors and Secrets of a Sun King.
Maths
We will be developing a whole range of mathematical skills, building on our previous knowledge of numbers, calculation and problem solving. This will include place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, and fractions. We will also be continuing to improve our knowledge of times tables, up to 12 x 12, and the division facts related to them.
Science
In Science this term, we will be learning about Earth and Space, where our enquiry question will be investigating whether the sun moves? We will also be completing our forces topic, where our enquiry question will be: “Will the heaviest object fall more quickly than the lighter one?”
Computing
During the Autumn term, the children will complete units on Concept Maps, Google Tools and Databases. They will also work on Coding and Spreadsheets.
History
In History this year, year 5 will be learning all about the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings. In the first two terms we will specifically learning about who they were, when they settled, why they settled and how. We will then move on to finding out about the Politics and power during this period of time in history.
Geography
In geography this term our topic will be “The United States: What are the similarities and differences between my region and Northern Brazil?”
Art
In art this term we will be learning about the artist Pablo Picasso. We will be focussing on our drawing skills and will develop these skills using a range of mediums such as pencil, charcoal, inks, chalk, pastels and computing software.
D&T
The children will be learning about mechanisms and structures through a Viking drawbridge project.
PSHE/RSE
During the Autumn Term Year 5 will be completing the topics ‘Relationships—Be yourself’ and ‘Health & Well-being—Think positive’
RE
In RE this term, we will explore Christian Aid and Islamic Relief and ask, “Can they change the world?” We will also consider commitments and meanings in Hindu, Muslim, Christian and non-religious worldviews.
French
In French this term, we will complete the topics “Pleased to Meet You” and “All About Ourselves”.
Music
Our first music unit this year is “What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor?”. In Autumn 2, the children will prepare for the Christmas Performance.
Spelling
This term we will learn spelling patterns including -tious and -ious, -cious, -cial and -tial, -ant, -ance and -ancy, -ent and -ence, -able and -ible, and -ably and -ibly, alongside challenge words.
PE
Topics this term include coordination, agility and fitness, netball, locomotion, strength and balance, and fitness and health through circuit training.
Online Safety
The children will be discussing the Acceptable Use Policy and practising logging onto the website that we regularly use in class e.g Bug Club, TT Rockstars, the VLE and Purple Mash. In Autumn 2, they will complete a unit on Image Alteration.
