Spring Term

English

We will be reading ,writing and exploring a variety of text types, including fiction, non-fiction and poetry. We will be developing our comprehension skills by analysing in detail, narrative poems written by the poets Charles Causley and Michael Rosen and the book ‘Oranges in No Man’s Land’. We will also be learning  more spelling patterns and grammar rules to help improve our independent writing. 

Maths

We will be continuing to develop a whole range of mathematical skills, building on our previous knowledge of numbers, calculation, problem solving, geometry, measurement and the tricky area of fractions and decimals. We will also be continuing to improve our knowledge of times tables, up to 12 x 12, and the division facts related to them. 

Science

This term, year 5 will be exploring the question, ‘Do solids that dissolve in liquid vanish?’ in our materials topic. 

Computing

Year 5 will be recapping their knowledge on Coding where they will be learning about abstraction and decomposition, friction and functions as well as creating strings.

Our second unit of work is databases where the children will be using the database program 2Investigate to learn about the functions of databases.

History

In our Anglo-Saxon and Viking topic we will be finding out about the legacy that was left behind by the Anglo-Saxons, learning about when did the Vikings invaded and who were the significant figures during this period of time. 

Geography

In our topic My Region and the Western United States we will be answering questions such as:

Additionally, we will be learning about biomes, climate zones, vegetation belts and earthquakes.

Art

 In art this term we will be completing a textiles project, learning about the work of Kaffe Fassett. We will be looking at fabric printing and tye-dying. 

D&T

During Spring 2 the children will be completing a project on materials, where they will produce a phone case where they will explore a range of sewing techniques. 

PSHE

Our topic this term is called ‘Living in the Wider World - Diverse Britain’ This unit is inspired by the idea that Britain represents a wide range of faiths and ethnicities and that the structures within it are there to support all. It aims to enable the children to identify how they can make a positive contribution to the community. In this unit, children learn about the law and the consequences of not respecting it. They will also learn about the workings of local and national government and the role of charities and voluntary groups in British society. 

RE

In RE this term, we will find out about the Muslim and Christian faith discussing who is inspiring and why?   

French

This term  will be learning French words associated with the body for example, arm, leg, foot and hand. After this we will start to explore vocabulary and short phrases associated with the town. 

Music

This term the children will be completing two units of work one is Classroom Jazz where the pupils' learning will be focused around two tunes and improvising. The songs that we will be studying will be -Three Note Bossa and Five Note Swing. Our second unit of work is called All the learning is focused around one song: The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air. The material presents an integrated approach to music where games, the interrelated dimensions of music (pulse, rhythm, pitch etc.), singing and playing instruments are all linked.

Along with recapping our spellings from lat term, we will be looking at the following spelling rules:

PE

Year 5 will be completing a range of activities during our PE lessons this term. These will include coordination, strength and balance skills as well as learning a range of net and wall games - learning the rules of and playing badminton. 

Online Safety

In Online Safety we will be learning about our online community: explaining that online communities can have both a positive and negative impact on the user.
